Perfect Printing Solution for Multiple Devices and/or Limited Space
February 24, 2015
We bought this for my in-laws as a last minute Christmas gift, and it was a great purchase. I have only had the opportunity to use this once, so I cannot comment too extensively on it; but I can tell you that my in-laws love it. It is super compact, prints good quality documents, the ink lasts for a long period of time, and it seamlessly connects to all of their electronic devices including IPad, phones (Android), and laptop (Windows).I printed my boarding pass from it with ease. Additionally, setup was extremely easy. Lastly, and as mentioned above, the size of the printer is super-compact which is really convenient for people with smaller homes / spaces for a printer.Quality: The quality of the printer is as good as my giant HP all in one printer. It is impressive.Overall Aesthetic Quality: It looks super-sleak.Packaging: This is Amazon's fault, so I will not needlessly penalize the product for this, but keep in mind that this item did not ship in a box. It shipped in its original manufacturer packaging with a label slapped on the outside. Like I said above, we purchased this as a Christmas gift. First, I am glad that we had it delivered to a friend's house, because if it arrived on their doorstep, they would have known what it was immediately. Second, the UPS guy left the item off to the side of the door, in the snow. Well, it was the original manufacturer packaging, so the box was damaged a bit by salt and wetness. This made the overall presentation of the product a little shotty when they opened it.Other than that though, no issues at all with the product, an I can fully recommend this to anyone.

My old Canon Pixma 150 cratered after 10+ years. Partly because in 2014 I started using recycled ink cartridges. I love LOVE this Epson. It's quieter, with super clean, clear images. Just about 1.5" smaller, it actually slides, even loaded with paper, on the printer tray all the way into my computer desk. Great surprise is the technical support videos. They are easy to understand and actually humorous. Who can't use a little humor when trying to fix or understand something? If your home office just needs printing, copying, and scanning this inexpensive item is so worth it. I connected it with the old printer cord directly to my computer, so I haven't evaluated the wireless, but it's available if you don't use a hard connection.
Perfect printer
November 3, 2014
I just recently bought this to replace another epson printer that i had been happy with but it was too big, had six colors so very expensive to replace and could not print from my ipad with it. I was able to set this up myself with very little difficulty for a 65 yr old non techy woman! I do think there could have been some instructions in the setup paper regarding setting up on an ipad as it it advertised especially good for ipad use. There were noneexcept to go to a certain website. So if you dont also have a laptop or other computer in which there it will tell you how to do for ipad from the cd, its kinda hard to figure out how to setup on ipad. The cd does mention that you have to set it up right on the printer if using an ipad and thats how i found out. Otherwise i would have been lost. If i did not have to monkey with figuring that out it probly would have only taken me ten minutes to set up otherwise. Even so it did not take long. I just use it for general home use and the printing is nice with saturated colors. Its very lightweight and small overall. Btw, if you want to use it as a scanner you have to download epsons iprint app but from there it works great! I am very pleased with this. I cant handle a lot of fancy options which this does not have so is perfect for me. I dont intend to use it to print pics either so dont know the quality for that. I found thru the years its was as expensive or more to do that with the photo paper and ink cost of doing that.
This is in every way exactly what I was looking for.
July 17, 2014
This is in every way exactly what I was looking for. It interacts with my Dell desktop, my laptop and both of my Kindle fire HDX tablets. It is in my home office but it responds from any area in the house. The print is clear and sharp. The colour, clarity and results when printing pictures is fantastic! It is much better and more convenient than my big 3 in 1 desktop. When I was making the decision to purchase I asked for advice on the Amazon site. Thank you to the gentleman that gave me information, answered my questions and recommended the Epson XP-410. I ordered it immediately. The setup was simple, it is small, neat, clean and attractive. If there is one downside it would have to be the price of the ink cartridges. Very pricey. For that reason I have kept the desktop for multiple copies, hand outs, etc.I would recommend this to anyone looking for a small WiFi accessible all-in-one printer. I don't think it gets any better than this.By the way I gave this 5 stars, when I read the review they only showed 4 so I'm correcting it, I would have given it 6 if possible.
Excellent! But be sure to buy ink with the printer, the included ink goes quick!
November 29, 2013
NOTE: You will use the supplied ink cartridges in it FAST! The ones that come with it barely have any ink at all. I printed Eight 8 1/2x11 pictures and was out of ink. Crazy! The replacement XL cartridges last MUCH longer and of course are really inexpensive. I look at the ink price more than the printer price because the printers all print the same pretty much. The menu system it has for setting up wifi is easy, the buttons are a little weird and take a little to get used to but work well. Instead of a "YES/NO" there is a square with a stripe in it and a triangle with a circle in it. That's just a bit strange. :) But you rarely have to press them unless you run out of paper.Wifi range on this is excellent, it's about 100 feet from my router and still picks up a single strong and prints without any issues. No paper jams so far over the last few months. Scans are good quality and save in all the formats.
so easy, even for a senior citizen who knows nothing of technology!

I held my breath in trepidation...my new Epson printer was delivered today....I unpacked it and stared at it, wondering if my anxiety meter was ever going to go down. For 2 hours the printer sat on my table, mean and menacing, while I intermittently circled around it. Finally , taking a deep breath, I approached it, hoping that my 65 year old tech challenged brain could overcome this new piece of 21st century monster that now lived in my home....OK, so it took me less than 1/2 hour to have this beautiful machine up and running.....WIRELESSLY EVEN! Thank you Epson! This is the easiest install I have ever done...to all you tech challenged seniors out there, run, don't walk, and get yourself an Epson printer!

A capable versitile solution for multiple SOHO functions.
February 27, 2016
This printer/copier/scanner/fax has worked great for me. I am a very occasional user, less than 10 printed pages per week, less than 1 copy per week, and almost no scans or faxes, ever. But I wanted a machine that could do all those things well, had robust components and capability, and would have economical consumables. This printer does all that. While it has very sophisticated features for a home office, it was not that difficult to setup. Just follow the instructions, exactly. Its just a machine, so it doesn't do Almost or Close or You Know What I Mean. I haven't had any questions that couldn't be answered by the documentation or online forums, and have had no problems at all. This printer is one of two I use, connected to a WiFi router through a Netgear switch. Just couldn't throw out the old HP laserjet 2300; now that's a work horse! The cable modem runs out to the centrally located WiFi router, then back to the office network switch where the HP and the MF216n are located. Maybe I'm just lucky, but I just plugged everything in, exactly as instructed, in the exact order instructed, and turned everything on, as instructed, and it all worked. Still works.

There are very specific instructions for setting up the fax. I did what I was instructed and setup went just fine. Everything else was even easier. I do not do any special functions involving scanning or faxing. Printing is just, printing. Although I did notice a considerable improvement in BW photo printing (this is Not a color printer) from the HP to the Canon; the Canon was so much clearer and detailed. I don't know why, but I suspect I just don't have the HP setup to do photo quality printing. The Canon not only gave me a much better photo print, but it was much faster than the HP as well. And the HP has a bunch of extra memory installed. So that was a nice surprise. Since I did not have a viable copying option before the MF216n came on board, those features have been delightful. The copying options in terms of zooming, orientation, and quality have been really useful. I use them more frequently than I thought I would. My bank sends me these reduced images of canceled checks, so its very convenient to be able to zoom in and copy just the image I need from a page with six reduced check images. 200% works for me, and put the image up in the upper left corner of the scanner platen. Expect some trial and error.

So I would highly recommend this printer for a home office. I have no idea how it would do under heavy daily use, but I tend to get as much or more machine than I think I'll need. Excess capacity is much easier to deal with than inadequate capacity, especially in a professional office setting where time and interruptions can be expensive, or embarrassing: "My machine is down, so let me run down to the copy center and I will get those right out to you." What? Don't go there. The equipment is just getting better, and cheaper. My first BW 300dpi laser printer cost over $1500; don't ask how long ago.

I looked at Epson, HP, even Dell, but for price, features, and consumables, this Canon, with the mostly high ratings, looked like it was worth a try. It was, and I would highly recommend it to anyone with SOHO needs. Hope it works as well for you, and keeps working well for me!
Smooth operator at a great price
February 12, 2016
I purchased this machine on the Amazon web site and paid the price quoted on the site with no promotional consideration.

So I bought this printer to replace an extremely lousy Epson all-in-one ink jet printer that went straight into the trash in less than one year. I was tired of replacing expensive ink cartridges and didn't really need color printing capabilities, so i decided to try this Canon black and white laser machine. What follows are a couple of thoughts on what to do if you take delivery on this excellent little printer. But first, let me report that this is a wonderfully smooth working machine. Set up is almost effortless if you follow my suggestions below. Also, some reviewers have complained about the touch screen. I had absolutely no problems with it. It is clear and easy to follow.

This machine does great at printing (both paper and envelopes), copying and scanning. The auto sheet feeder for copying and scanning works very well. I do not use the fax function as I do not have a hard line phone any longer. So here are my suggestions for setting it up.

1. Open the box and read the instructions first. If you do (which I do recommend), you will be very confused because they are complex and hard to follow. I am not a computer professional, but I have been working with PCs. and MACs for many years. The instructions are necessary for general background, but they are not helpful in setting up your machine - just too confusing. I got this machine up and running in no time on my MAC without using the instruction manual
2. Connect the printer to your router via the supplied ethernet cable
3. Connect and supplied power cord to the printer and plug it in
4. Turn the printer on - power button is on the lower left hand side, on the front of the machine
5. The printer touch pad screen will light up and you will need to input a couple of items such as date and time etc.
6. Do not use the supplied CD for the Printer Drivers, instead
7. Go to the Canon USA web site and download and install the most recent fax (if using) and printer (MF Toolbox) drivers for the machine. The ScanGear driver doesn't work and is not needed for the machine to run and scan successfully. Just ignore that download.

You do not need to connect the USB cable to this machine as long as it is connected to your WIFI router. It works great without the USB connection.

The machine should be ready to go. At this point, you should be able to control copying from the touch screen, printing from your computer applications and scanning from either the touch screen or the MF Toolbox you downloaded from the Canon web-site. Any problems can be quickly and easily resolved by calling Canon customer support at 800-652-2666. I did call with a couple of questions and they were able to resolve my issues very professionally and efficiently.

Can't recommend this machine enough for home use.
You won't be sorry (Works with Win 10!!!!)
January 15, 2016
Ok saw other post saying that this item didn't work with Windows 10 Wrong, It works wonderfully and prints super fast. Lighting took out my old Brothers MFC unit and I decided I was downsizing this time. Instead I got twice the printer for half the price. I hooked my up through the network and it works great. My suggestion is to plug in the printer into the network first. Reboot the router and install the software then you in business. even better is I can print anywhere in my house from my iPhone or iPad using AirPrint. For the money you can,t go wrong..
GoodBYE ink purchases, HELLO LASER!
December 19, 2015
This has really been a great printer so far. We purchased it in November 2015 and it's now 12-19-2015 (owned about a month now) It prints EVERY TIME and the quality is excellent. The only problem we had was the power cord (it's one of those standard cords you see all the time, just like the one you would see on the back of a computer monitor). It didn't fit perfectly. Meaning that if you moved the printer (like pushing it back into it's location after an installation) the power just shut off. Once I replaced it with one of the several cords I had laying around the house (from old monitors and equiptment that used the same style cord) it worked perfectly,so it shouldn't be used against the product for a 4 star, instead of a 5. No more stupid INK purchases! Laser is the way to go. I do miss being able to print color pictures, but that was an ink expense we will not miss. Just print your pictures using an online service, or your local drug store.
PERFECT HOME OFFICE STUDENT MACHINE
May 26, 2015
Very nice printer, copier, fax, and scanner. You must download the pdf file for this printer, or you will not know all the features and how to use them. The instructions that come with it are just to hook up the printer. You will need to know how to get around with the Software installation disk because there are different programs on the disk that you will want to install. You will need a Cat 5 Ethernet Cable or a USB to Printer High Speed Cable, and an extra phone cable to go from printer to phone.
I have only one phone line so I bought a Telephone splitter that I plugged into my Vonage VOIP and from there I plugged one line into my phone, and the other line to the bottom phone plugin on the printer; however, I do not believe this is necessary because you can plug your wall line into the bottom of the printer, and a phone line from the top plugin of the printer to your phone itself and I believe the phone will still work with the machine off. I cannot receive faxes while I am on the phone, but when I am off of the phone the faxes come in very nice; you can test your fax with Canon's auto test number which is 18553922666.

Your download to learn how to use the Printer, Scanner, Fax, and Copier is located at:
http://gdlp01.c-wss.com/gds/6/0300017526/01/MF229dw_UsersGuide_EN.pdf

If you are a Home/Office and your company wants a system that Does Not Have a wireless feature because of safety reasons, then this is the Printer/Scanner/Copier, and Fax machine you want. Just remember that if you want to receive faxes while you are on the phone, I believe you need a 2 line phone system; one that is dedicated to the fax, and one that is dedicated to the phone, however, the system does work on a one line phone system, but you just need to make sure no one is using the phone, and the faxes come in very nicely.

When the system is not in use you can simply put a large plastic garbage bag over it for a waterproof cover and dust cover; however, like all devices let them cool down first in order not to trap heat.

I have not used the quiet mode because to me it is not very loud, and just to print out one fax, or one letter the machine is so fast that by the time it starts the printing is over.

The Starter Cartridge that came with it says it is at 100 Percent full which is unusual for starter cartridges because they are usually about only 50 percent full.
If you are interested in a good telephone splitter; this is the one I purchased; however, you do not need it for this printer.

the setup for which was very easy, and then the communication between my phone and ...
March 21, 2015
The wireless wizard worked very well when I first set it up. I expected my Chromebook and my phone to pick up the printer immediately, but this was not the case. I downloaded the Epson app to my droid, the setup for which was very easy, and then the communication between my phone and the printer was instant. The Chromebook setup was also easy after I typed in the printer's IP address into the browser window. I've been using computers for a long time, so none of this was complicated at all. Any more, I just expect wireless components to talk to each other without any fuss, and I didn't expect to have to set everything up. This is not a complaint at all, the extra procedures make perfect security sense to me, I just thought I'd add a few instructions to anyone who decides to purchase this great little printer.
Easy set up and maintenance
January 23, 2015
Easy set up and maintenance. We've had this printer for a year and it hasn't failed us yet (with light use). Great price, prints quickly, and is pretty quiet. We picked this particular model because it supports AirPrint which is a feature of Apple products. We can very easily, and quickly print documents wirelessly from out iPad, and iPhones. Just click the share icon button on your Apple device (looks like a box with un up arrow in it), scroll over and select print. The printer will automatically show up in the list of printers and simply select print. There may not be a huge set of bells and whistles on this printer as it doesn't have a fax machine, but we've also printed 5X7 photos, and 4X6 photos and they turn out quite all right! So if you're low on ink on your current/outdated printer, then you might as well just pick this one up as it won't be too much more $ considering how much ink costs.
Linux Dance Steps Below
December 20, 2014
First of all, if you're a Windows or Mac user, I have no data for you beyond the last three paragraphs.Linux users: docked a star for lack of Linux instructions (so we're a minority, we still deserve our own instructions!). I bought this printer because of its small footprint and impact on the wallet, as well as Epson's rep. Also because a Linux-using reviewer characterized it as posing no problems to get to work on that system. However, these are the steps you must follow:Don't bother with the included CD.Select the correct packages for your flavor of Linux and your CPU hardware (32- or 64-bit) from Epson's site. I happen to run Mint on a 32-bit system; this is the kind of information you will need. If you are firmly convinced your computer is a two-bit piece of &#!+, you need to do more research. The printer requires one package, the scanner, two. Those two must be INSTALLED IN A SPECIFIC ORDER: the data package first, the core package second. This is covered on Epson's FAQ page. (Thank you, Epson!)So before you jump on this one, if you're a Linux user, I strongly suggest you go to Epson's site and see what you're up against. If your own level of knowledge is "beginner," you may wish to find a more experienced user and bribe them with cookies or pepper-infused vodka, as the case dictates. When you first turn on this printer, wait for the cartridge container to finish an extensive ballet across its track and back, again, and again, and again ... It does stop, eventually, in a position which allows you to install the cartridges. You haven't gotten a defective one, though it may have exhausted the patience you will need to install it if you run Linux. The printer scans accurately and prints nicely. It's a little noisy, but shuts itself off automatically after a short period of idleness. The digital user interface on its pop-out control board is a little clunky, as such things tend to be, but very clear. No data yet on how ink-consumptive it is.
Update: Great compact printer - so far
April 28, 2014
Remember you get what you pay for and I paid only about $70 plus extended warranty (was only $5.00). This is my first wireless printer. My better quality Epson needs some repair but I figured it would cost more than $70 to do so. This printer should work for now. I'm giving four stars as the set up was not 100% error free. I ended up just going to the printers and drivers section of my computer and selecting the printer that way. But so far printing very well wirelessly, no jamming (have only printed out a few pages, just got today). Black and white clear, no smudges; have not printed in color yet (don't want to waste ink), but will try it soon. Overall, satisfied for now. Will update again as I've used.Update: Have used each day and printing is great, quality is fine including color print. Have not tried photos yet but I'm very satisfied with this little printer. So far, I would get another one if needed.
Designed to Sell Epson Inks- Things Have Changed
April 26, 2014
"For the money" this is a capable printer, scanner, copier. It's also small, light weight. and fairly rugged. But, if you print a lot, you will use a lot of ink, and now, you will be using only Epson OEM inks. I have purchased two of these all-in-one machines. The first one lasted 6 months, having printed about 250 pages per week, mostly B&W but also perhaps 30 pages of color. The machine traveled with me on the road, being trundled in and out of buildings on a daily basis. I didn't expect the seemingly flimsy plastic to last, but it certainly did. Unfortunately, it began leaking ink, finally refusing to print. Having had miserable experience with HP printers sold as portables at 8 times the cost of this Epson, I bought another Epson XP-410. This experience has not been altogether wonderful. First I could not plug the new XP-410 in my Lenovo X-1 and have it work with the drivers for the previous XP-410. I had to remove the previous drivers. When I installed only the printer and scanner drivers, however, the printer would not function. So, I had to install the entire Epson software suite. Now the printer was recognized, but in the blink of an eye, Epson notified me that the "firmware was being updated." I did not recognize this as an aggressive, sinister act, but have since come to see it that way. All went well until the black ink cartridge ran out. Replacing this with one of the rebuilt cartridges the previous XP-410 accepted, I was informed "black XL cartridge not recognized." The machine would not print with the refilled cartridge. This is a sea change from the behavior of the previous XP-410. The first XP-410 simply informed me that I was not using an OEM cartridge and quality might suffer. You were allowed to proceed. This is no longer an option. My guess is that the firmware upgrade contained instructions to identify and reject any non- Epson cartridges. Presumably, Epson is now copying the men's razor business model. The general idea is to sell a nice hand piece with a couple of blades, perhaps at a loss only to get the money back many times over selling replacement blades that only fit that handpiece. I'm in hopes that the refilled cartridge people will find a way around this problem. But I modestly propose that one purchase a new XP-410 every time the ink runs out. The cost of the XP-410 is currently seventy dollars in round numbers while the cost of a package OEM ink cartridges is about thirty- eight dollars. So, one could most likely sell the XP-410 on one of the auction sites for fifty dollars and have only twenty two dollars spent to acquire the next, new XP-410 with a new ink supply. Overall a nice machine but be aware of the cost of the ink.
Impressive!
January 9, 2014
Im very impressed with this printer so far, does everything i could ask it to do. Like anything it works better with a wired connection vs wifi. The wifi is not bad by any means, but to use the scanner feature you have to jump through a bunch of hoops with epson and google and then have it forward the scan to you via email. Plug in the usb problem solved.\My only two gripes about it:1) No usb cable, Really Epson? I know its wifi but shouldn't I at least have the option?2) Set up is a breeze, But for whatever reason it can lose the wifi connection and it won't print anything. The first time i spent hours trying to change things and troubleshoot the problem. Learn from my waste of time and just turn of the printer and reset the router and then turn the printer back on. Works every time, but not something i should have to do.For the tech savvy people this printer is a great deal and will do everything a student needs. For the less tech savy people put a usb cord in your cart when you buy this.

Works well. Reliable connection. Auto-sleep function is great.
June 12, 2016
This thing does everything I need. I finally wised up and canned the color printer because I never use the colors and nowadays manufacturers program these printers to not function until every ink tank is operational. When I end up printing 99% black and white anyway, there's no point to owning a color printer.

There are too many customizable options to list. The auto feeder works well. Auto-sleep works great. It wakes itself promptly upon any interaction with the printer. My last scanner didn't give me the option to scan as a jpg or pdf. This is an upgrade in that sense. I havent tried the fax yet.

My only gripe is the touchscreen. The damn touchscreen doesnt accept my input until I tap whichever indicator 5-12x. It eventually works, but dude. HMI's have been around for a while now... I'm typing this entire review with a touchscreen. You have to use the touchscreen each time you perform any function on the printer. This is the only reason it gets 4 stars and not 5. I would buy this again but in the hopes that Canon would improve the function of the touchscreen.
Great printer, not wireless.
October 25, 2015
Great Printer however make sure you don't need a wireless printer. This is not wireless. Fortunately though you can connect it to your router and still print 'wirelessly' including from your iPhone. The only inconvenience is you are limited to where you place the printer. Prints very clearly and quickly, a bit noisy however. Overall much better than any ink jet option in terms of speed, quality print and prints per cartridge. Oh additionally it only prints black and white which will be okay for most people. It is also very easy to set up.
Working fine so far
September 29, 2015
I bought and set this printer up for another entity. It seems to be working fine so far. Note that with this not being a wireless network printer a hardwired cat cable to the router is necessary to accomplish Air printing and printing access across the network. It is assumed by the manufacturer and seller that the end user will know this intuitively. That seems like an unfair assumption to me. In my case I had to drill a hole in a wall to run the cable to the router to accomplish this. In this instance it was not really a problem for me but I imagine it would be for a lot, if not most, people.
Just What I Needed for Small Office, but Here's Some Set up Tips
February 22, 2015
I am computer literate and usually do just fine with device set ups. This was a bit challenging but I found the Cannon support number to yield short wait times and very helpful techs. Here are a few things that I encountered that might help you: 1) While there are colored buttons on the front panel the "on button" was difficult to find! It is found in the front in the lower left corner, colored all in black, when you know where to find it, easy to then find. 2) I plugged the USB cable in the wrong slot in the back so of course even with DVD installation all complete my lap top did not recognize the printer. So, to be clear: plug the USB cord into the slot in the back that has a silver screw next to it. 3) Follow all instructions to the letter on the setup DVD and only plug in the USB cable at the point you are told to do so. (You have to provide your own USB cable, as with most printers, this is the case with this one). I also selected this model because I have no need for a wireless printer and this model advertises as only for USB set up, less options to confuse me at set up were my thoughts! The print quality is awesome, crisp, clear printing. The paper "tray" is not really a tray that can be removed, so it is a bit of a challenge to get much paper into the paper intake area located at the bottom of the unit. That is why I gave 4 stars. In my opinion it does NOT comfortably hold 250 sheets or it will mis-feed. It seems to work best at about 3/4 full capacity. I need an automatic document feeder for work purposes, not everyday, just once and awhile and this paper feed is very good, takes about 30 pages at a time, no issues there. 4) The power cord on this unit seems shorter than on other printers I've bought. I don't like using extension cords, fortunately I have an outlet fairly nearby or it could have been a problem. The starter toner cartridge has already printed 300 sheets. About 8 years ago I bought a Cannon printer and have it at home, a laser jet, and it is still going strong, that is one reason I decided on this brand again. Also another reason I decided on Canon: being able to talk easily to tech person is awesome. With some other brands I've had in the past, the tech call center for the printer divisions are understaffed equating to long wait times.
Good Value, excellent performance
December 24, 2014
Excellent print quality, easy setup, and the scanning and faxing and copying functions are easy to use. The only downside is the cost of toner, which is a bit on the high side.

Not crazy about this printer
December 31, 2015
Do you need to print, copy or scan documents quickly? Then do NOT buy this printer. I don't hate it - it was relatively easy to set up and is also relatively easy to use - but it's really only suitable as a home printer for occasional use. It is NOT a good office or home office printer. If I had it to do over again, I'd buy something else. I chose this one primarily because it has generally good reviews, and I'm sorry I did.Edited to add: It also goes through ink like no printer I've ever owned. I have to change cartridges about every 100 pages. Ridiculous.

December 7, 2015
I liked the wireless but it's still a bit of a hassle to manage and use. It looks nice for your home office. The color quality is good. The printing speed and noise is okay for printer of this price. The biggest problem is the ink. It will deplete your ink fast. And the ink is not cheap either. Consider a replacement for the ink, which is Epson 200XL Black + 200 Cyan/Yellow/Magenta Combo Saver Pack, that's $56 to print about 50-75 high quality color pages, minus the test pages you have to do. Always look up the price of the ink for printer you're about to buy.
Follow-up review after owning for 7 months
April 15, 2014
Follow-up review after owning for 7 monthsAfter using the printer for 7 months, I have found that the printer has a couple of significant negatives. If the printer is not used for several days, the print heads have to be cleaned, else the printed document has skips. Also, when printing a Word document with borders, the border prints crooked, i.e., not aligned on the page.Follow up to original review:I was finally able to get it to work wirelessly. The installation instructions were short on details, and the troubleshooting instructions were even less informative. I kept installing/uninstalling until I hit the right sequence of actions to get it to work. I am not sure exactly what the right sequence was, but a three things that I did differently on the successful installation. I don't know if any/all of these were the difference, but I provide them for information. One, I did NOT use the USB cable for the setup as was suggested by the installation instructions, I set it up wirelessly. Second, I powered my router off/on before the successful install. Third, my primary computer on which I was attempting to set up the printer is normally a wired connection to the router, I unplugged the Ethernet cable on the computer and did the set up wirelessly.I am frustrated and disappointed. Based on the reviews on Amazon, I was hoping that this printer would be wirelessly compatible with my 6 month old Dell computer running Windows 7, and a Cisco Valet router. It is not compatible.. Not sure yet what the problem is, but it is proving to be a difficult set up. The printer connects to my home network. My computer is connected to my home network. Yet, my computer and printer cannot communicate wirelessly. I am sure that the problem has something to do with my Windows 7 home network, but I am still disappointed that Epson did not provide a product that could compensate for Microsoft's shortcomings.
Nice budget 3 in 1
March 5, 2014
Update 5/13/14: I've knocked this printer down from 4 star to 3 because the ink doesn't last as long as my last ink burning printer! The replacement black cartridge is 29.99 for the xl, which I do hope will last longer than the ones which came with the printer. The good news is that this printer allows you to mix your color inks to make black if you need to print before you've gotten more ink. It's a great function that I missed with my last printer. This Epson is still working well otherwise.*****The only thing I dislike is that the paper loads in the back. If you plan to tuck your printer on a shelf that's something to keep in mind. This is my first non-HP printer in ages. My last one was pretty good and lasted a long time, but I really wanted to get a laser because we go through so much ink. My HP quit on me after many years of loyal service, so I ordered this on Amazon needing it in a hurry. I picked it because it's smaller than the laser 3 in 1 printers that I saw on the site, and --for the price-- it will do for now till I've had a chance to do some serious shopping. It does not come with a USB cable to connect to your computer which is a bit silly. And, the plastic paper drawers seem very flimsy. At $69 this printer is great. If I paid $99 I might be a little disappointed, as the paper slots seem like they would be easily broken. Wireless set up took longer than I expected, but it works just fine. I can't say how long it will last or how long the ink will last either at this point, but I'll update my review once I've had it for awhile. So far, I do like it. It's actually smaller than my old 3 in 1 and the larger front touch screen panel is very user friendly.
Decent printer, sucks up the ink
December 1, 2013
I bought this printer because it is fairly inexpensive and it is identical to one I have in another location, thus making for painless establishment of wireless compatibility with my family's numerous and varied mobile phones and computers. The wireless operation is very convenient and I don't have to do a lot of color printing, so the fact that this little beast literally slurps up printer ink is not such a big deal for me. If I didn't have a b/w laser printer for heavier printing jobs I would have to find a less thirsty inkjet printer than this one.The print quality is middle-of-the-pack; if I needed to print color photos or glossy reports I would have bought a higher-end machine. The machine works well and seems sturdy enough; the only reason I gave it 3 stars is that it uses so much ink--and the OEM ink is not cheap. (After a bad experience with non-OEM ink I will now only buy ink from the original equipment manufacturer.)
GREAT printer, once you make a couple tweaks!
November 5, 2013
This printer is nice and well-built, but it does use a TON of ink.... and everything prints VERY dark (unless in Draft mode, then it is so light that it's barely visible).HOWEVER, there is a fix that will help you print TRUE TO COLOR, PRINT FASTER and SAVE INK!<Go into Control Panel/Devices and Printers<Right Click on XP-410 Series Printer and click on "Printing Preferences"<Click on the "Advanced" Tab<Select the print mode you use most often (for me it is Text and Image)<In the right hand "Color Management" column, click the "SETTINGS" button (Color mode should be set to EPSON vivid)<On the bottom left of the Color Control Menu, increase the brightness to +15, and the density to -20<Click okay and the menu will save your settings and closeDo a test print to see if this is printing more true to color for your screen. If not, try a different quality in those columns until you get the right "recipe" for your setup. You can adjust these qualities for each print job, but if you set them as your printing preferences, it will default to these qualities every time and save lots of ink. (You can always change it as needed)YOU WILL NEED TO SAVE THESE CHANGES FOR EACH COMPUTER YOU PRINT FROM!Ever since I made this change, I LOVE this printer! The colors are now beautiful instead of dark, I get great ink usage, and I love the compact/sturdy feel and the fast wireless printing. This printer is FANTASTIC with just a couple tweaks!

READ HOW TO SET UP FIRST BEFORE PURCHASE
October 20, 2016
READ SETUP FIRST! I bought the printer a few weeks back. As mentioned by several others. Setting this thing up for wifi truly is a nightmare. Prepare for google searching how to set this up because the directions for this is crap and vague. Just pictures without a clear description and the directions you do get do not reference what you'll see on the printer operating screen.

Other than that it runs quiet, its fast, and prints really well. If you have the patients or know how its worth the discount.
Ok printer - misleading stats.
October 20, 2016
It's a little misleading honestly, though the quality and speed are nice for this printer - it is NOT "Apple AirPrint" ready. That was the sole reason I bought this printer and it doesn't work that way. Instead it needs to be hooked up to a router on a wireless network. I'd honestly return the printer if it wasn't such a hassle to send back to Amazon.
Excellent quality printer, very fast, but had problems with power up
July 28, 2015
Fast, superb quality printing (I bought this only as a printer/scanner, but may hook up the FAX later)

ISSUES: The first printer would not power up, no matter what, even using two different power cords. Returned that to Amazon & they sent out a second one that would not power up :(

Looked like the power posts needed to be spread apart to make good contact with the power cord & I used needled nosed pliers to accomplish this. Would not power up with the cord Canon included in the package but did work with a 15 year old cord from an HP printer.

Insert the included disc into your PC, load the drivers, follow the instructions in the booklet for setup, go to the DEVICES & PRINTERS section of your computer & assign this as your main printer. NOTE: it defaults to FAX if you don't do this.

It would be a 5-star printer but it took two tries, a modification to the power posts & using a different power cord to get it working.
Personal multifunction laser quality
June 17, 2015
Pros: Easy accurate Win7 set-up. Fast printing, even from sleep mode, (I haven't printed a large doc yet, so I can't speak to ppm.) Laser sharp text printouts. Copy feeder and copy quality seem good. Can be put on the wireless LAN via ethernet.

Cons: Truly terrible touch screen, exactly as explained in another post. The poor touchscreen is immediately and constantly frustrating to use, and seems likely to fail very soon. I wish the printer just used all push buttons, and it actually has plenty of physical buttons, although you often can't use them as you would expect. Really have to wonder at the engineering and execution of the entire control panel.
.. If the internal battery is discharged and the printer is unplugged, every time the printer is restarted it requires the date and time to be reentered using the crappy touchscreen sitting right next to a perfectly good number pad... Which is apparently only used for faxing? Because we all fax so much these days... Anyway, so if you don't print a lot and don't want to leave it always plugged in and drawing electricity, using that junk touchscreen to put in the time before you can print it's a drag. I can't find a way to disable the clock feature. No USB cable in the box. Only ships with starter toner cartridge, and replacement is expensive. Bigger than expected, but that's my fault...but it's not too heavy.

This printer is almost a true office machine, and seems to be an excellent multifunction personal laser overall except for the touchscreen and overall stupidity of the control panel. Still, so far it's much better than the usual cheap multifunction inkjets that I have used.

Inkjets--Cheap Up Front, Expensive in the Longrun
December 27, 2016
I bought this printer back in 2013 not knowing what I have since learned about inkjet printers. Up front, you should know that in order to for an inkjet to be useful, it needs to be used regularly--say at least one or a couple times a month; otherwise, the ink clogs up the heads and, not only affects print quality, but will waste TONS of ink from the cartridges as you run a cleaning to unclog. You will spend a lot on consumables (ink), so if you're a sporadic at-home printer like my family, make a switch to laser printers. Yes, inkjets can be cheap (when I bought this model, it was only $60, a popular price point for many models, but you spend much more on frequent printing (sometimes higher than having them professionally printing). With that out of the way, here is my review of this particular printer. I bought it with the intention of using it for borderless printing for my son's invitations, but you can't really do that for special paper sizes. Works fine for flyers on 8.5x11, but I use special paper sizes for invitations, and even with trying to configure it manually, it would not accept them, and I had to use a machine at work. Print quality was decent, but it expended huge amounts of ink, thus ballooning the price per print to huge levels. It prints about the same speed as other inkjets I've had, so neither fast or terribly slowly, but there is a long startup between spooling the print and actually printing--annoying when you're heading out the door and need a confirmation or something printed. The scanning works fine and scan quality is decent.Wireless printing is sporadic. When the power would go out, I would have to reset everything, which is annoying. The user screen is easy to use and attractive. The machine is lightweight and average size, taking up the entirety of our little side table. The reason I gave this machine two stars is simple--after a month and a half of use, a printhead clogged and would not unclog no matter how many times I cleaned it. In total, I maybe got six months out of this machine, frustrating the heck out my husband who is the one who used it more than anyone (which wasn't much).Bottom line: I made the switch to a monochrome laser and will reserve color printing for the professionals (because I don't print often). Laser may not be great for printing pictures, but I wasn't really printing those at home anyway, and because it uses toner, it never dries out. It prints much faster, and it's also wireless and scans. I will never go back to inkjet, and I suggest that others in my same boat make the switch too.
You get what you pay for data transfers are slow and wifi is finicky
December 2, 2014
Yes it scans and prints wirelessly and yes it works very easily w/ iOS devices (iphone 5s and ipad mini bot on OS 8.1.1)Set up on a MAC was even relatively simple and painless. Here's where things start to fall apart:The data transfer is PAINFULLY slow over wifi and USB and you'll have to mess w/ your printer settings in system preferences every third time you use it wirelessly (OSX Yosemite i5 macbook air w/ 8g RAM).You also can't scan multiple documents and send to your machine as a batch. Every individual page is sent to you machine as a separate file. In retrospect I shouldn't be surprised based on the price but I'm allowed to be annoyed by this, right?I'll use it until it breaks or I inevitably throw it out the window.
Would not buy again :(
April 17, 2014
I was looking for a cheap wireless printer to use in my home office. Apparently I got what I paid for.I have been working with computers since the 1980's so I am not a novice at setting things up, etc... The only real problem I am having with it is a biggie though (and if you do a web search of Epson XP-410 Wireless you will see I'm not the only person with this problem). The wireless doesn't always work. This wouldn't be a biggie for me if either after turning the printer on/off it reestablished a connection or turning the PC on/off it restarted - but NO. This thing truly has a mind of its own. Will work for a day or two - stop for a week or so - and then out of the blue start working again. It is located near the PC where I mainly use it on, however it is a wall mounted all-in-one with not a cord to be seen coming out of it and the ONLY reason I purchased this printer was because I didn't want to see the dreaded mass of cables coming out from behind this computer.I eventually will move it to another location in my home and plug it in with a cable (the good old fashioned way), however if you are looking to place it in a home office or anywhere that guests will see it - you may want to reconsider purchasing it IF wireless printing and lack of cables are important to you.
Apparently printing from your new printer is an unreasonable request...
February 3, 2014
I got this printer one week ago and have used it twice. Today, I went to print a paper I have due tomorrow and it won't print. My computer says that the printer isn't connected. Restarted both devices, wireless router, uninstalled wifi on both devices, wasted over an hour of my time trying to get this stupid product to do the one job it was created to do and it can't even do that. Epson's (might I add, terrible) website provided me with no help, every other problem that could go wrong with this piece of crap printer is listed except if the printer won't connect no matter what you do. DONT BUY THIS PRINTER if you want to be able to print documents, you will be as disappointed and infuriated as I am.
FOUR reviews: Please read all

Part ISo far so good. Installation was the best yet for a printer that Ihave owned. I am still trying to recover from an HP, which wasjust over a year old, and headed for donation because ofinordinate frustrations with the ink, ink supply notifications, and other fatal flaws. This really is a small unit. The HP looks like an oaf next to it.Part III replaced the printer within 7 months. Fortunately it was stillunder warranty. Epson sent a new one, and I did not have toreturn the "old" one. It had begun to print images psychedelicallyand later the ink started leaking from all cartridges. So 5 stars dropped to 3.Part IIIReplacement printer went nuts, just like the first one did, andbegan to print hieroglyphics one day. It's cheap, and whenI keep an eye on it, it's acceptable. But I think if uncheckedit would print a ream. Good luck.Part IVThe printer quit. I could still scan, but not print anything. Guesswhat? I ordered another one because I like them, even afterthey go haywire - partly because they are so inexpensive.Beware.
Died after 2 and a half month of use
October 6, 2013
The printer doesn't have USB cable. I had to order one via Amazon. The printer makes big noises when it making copy or printing. I was shocked at the first time by its noise. The paper tray doesn't work well. I had to call Epson support for help. Still, the copies or printouts were so blur even I set up extra fine feature. Worse, the printer died after 2 and a haft months of use. I called Epson support. After asked me a series of questions and did some diagnosis, the Epson agent agreed that my printer is defective and placed me a replacement. He said that I don't have to return the broken one to Epson, just do what ever I want with it. Then, the replacement arrived after 1 week. It came with a regular carton package, not with original printer box, and without power cord?!!!. The replacement looks used with many scratches. It doesn't have any film cover as my defective does. There was a note that I have to return the defective printer to Epson within 1 week or my credit card will be charged. So who will pay me for wasting my time and all of my important documents pending due to the defective printer? I called Epson again. After getting my printer's details, another Epson agent said that I don't have to return the defective one. So disappointed.

The printer itself is fine. The Google Cloud Print everything is GARBAGE
July 21, 2017
The printer itself is fine. The Google Cloud Print everything is GARBAGE. It's terribly complicated to get it registered, then randomly it just is offline as far as Google Cloud Print shows. Works locally, everything shows it's still setup, but no. And don't even bother trying to re-register it. Canon, you should be ashamed of yourselves.
Problems with Google Cloud Print and Scanning
September 17, 2016
Works fine as a printer from Windows but has two serious drawbacks--
1. Google Cloud Print (necessary for Chromebooks) is hard to get working (I have not suceeded yet), many report problems.
2. It scans ONLY to your PC, not to a USB thumb drive. Now scanning to your PC would be great if it worked, but it is trouble prone--you have to have the Canon software on your PC installed and communicating correctly, and it has a lot of problems. It may have to be run with Admin permission. Of course no support for Linux. People visiting with their own computers need to go through a computer with the software installed, then a thumb drive. Supporting a USB drive would be a simple low tech backup that would help a lot.
3. Touch screen is terrible as others have noted.

I may be too harsh in my rating since it works fine as a printer. These problems are not super serious but they are so unnecessary, so I am harsh.
NOT a wireless connection
August 28, 2016
This is a fine machine...for the 5 minutes that we had it on...until we found out that if you want wireless (thought everything was wireless now) you need to order the 217w.
Five Stars
May 9, 2016
This is a revised review. Originally I gave it 5 stars. Now in less than 6 months with light use in a small business it keeps failing. It stops being recognized by our network by the . Spent hours online with the Canon techs on three or four separate occasions. I have had an IT out at the office three times now at over a $150.00 a pop (for a $100.00 printer) for over $450.00. Each time they get it up and running and then the printer eventually quits again and it varies from computer to computer as to which one won't recognize it. Our other printer we bought from Amazon has not had any of the same issues during this time period when the canon keeps failing. They keep blaming the "computer even though it varies each time which ones won't print to it. Through spending time and money on this one.

November 19, 2015
This is a fine printer as long as you don't plan on using the fax feature. The print quality is good, it's fast and scans well. But despite many attempts at faxing from this unit not one was successful. The setup and use of the fax feature are non-intuitive. The documentation is sparse at best. Since I wanted this mainly as a fax station this failed to meet my expectations.

This printer has been nothing but a headache since I first purchased it for $70. I thought that I was making a good choice because of the wifi capability and some of the reviews when purchasing but I was so wrong. The ink doesn't last, it is very expensive to replace, it is difficult to connect to iphone and any other apple products, and now it is not printing even after replacing the ink and doing a nozzle clean. I will not ever purchase another epson product.
The WORST thing in my life. Better save time and draw what you want to print, it will come out better
January 7, 2017
This is the worst printer in the world. A child for a science fair project could make something better than this large piece of waste. It fools you by looking like a printer, and even pretends to have features, but it doesn't actually print anything remotely close to what is sent to this 80s reject of a printer. All the tragic comedy complaints one could have about a printer WILL happen to you if you waste your money on this head ache producer. The one thing the product does consistently is raise your blood pressure. The paper does not load straight, when it prints anything at all it looks like a kindergarteners interpretation of what was meant to be printed, and none of the features work correctly.

today i threw all my Epson printers- 9 in all. seven 3640, one 2540 and two xp-410. i am finally liberated!!! never again!!! My experience is thus: the xp-410 printers were lemons from the start. new ink, old ink, more new ink. no matter. waste time on phone. waste time cleaning heads. waste time and money... if you want to spend a fortune on ink, then Epson is for you. If you want error messages and paper jams, then Epson is for you. However, if you want a printer that works, then Epson printers are not for you. someone smart once said, that those that forget the past are condemned to repeat it. I am writing this review more as a note to myself. you, dear reader, most likely will be tempted by the cheap price and ignore my review. be warned! cheap things are not good and good things are not cheap. epson is both - not cheap and not good. At least for me, Epson is history.
HUGE PIECE OF CRAPOLA
March 4, 2016
I absolutely have hated this printer from day one. I bought it almost two years ago. I just needed a printer for a random copy here and there and to print forms occasionally so I didnt need anything fancy but every time I go to use this printer it seems I have a problem. The life of the ink cartridges makes them way more expensive instead of being a money saver as I had hoped. My latest two print jobs were a new price list for work which kept printing with a missing line even with brand new cartridges and all the random maintenance settings ran then wouldnt copy my tax forms without running the copy in color (even though I just wanted black and white for records) and maximum density or it was missing about 70% of the copy. I dont even think Ill try to sale it at a yard sale this summer, I think Ill just chuck it in garbage and save some other poor soul the trouble.
Cheap printer, overpriced ink.
January 21, 2015
Printer works - mostly, but with the last software update, you pretty much have to use their ink. That wouldn't be a problem, except that if you buy one cartridge each of all four colors, you've pretty much spent the same amount of money as the printer costs. It prints, but with the small reservoirs and pricey ink, looks like I'm printer shopping again. And no, the aftermarket cartridges don't work. They did, but not any longer.
Can't effectively use Wi-Fi Direct Routerless with AirPrint
April 30, 2014
My Dad's in a nursing home and only uses an iPad. He occasionally wants to print. He is on the nursing homes internet and cannot connect a printer to that network. The thought was to have him change networks and have him directly connect to the printer via Epson's Wi_Fi Direct Routerless which sets up an SSID for the printer that the iPad can connect with. This connect works once per setup. Once the connection is broken - ie. when my Dad reconnects with the nursing home public network, he cannot later reconnect with the printer without the printer being powered down and going through the setup process again for Wi-Fi Direct according to Epson support. Thus the process if I had kept this printer for my Dad to print would be:1) Turn the printer on and off2) Go to the Wi-fi screen and reinitialize the Wi-FI Direct Routerless setup3) switch the ipad wifi to the printers SSID4) airprintLooking for a printer with just steps 3 and 4 and not 1 and 2.

June 5, 2017
Worst all-in-one I've ever used:
- Paper jams virtually impossible to clear
- Printed output to light to read
- The 'Density' function doesn't change the printed output (darker/lighter)
- There is no contrast function
- The touch screen has to be pressed multiple times to activate a function
- 'Processing/Data' light comes on though there is no data to process
Waste of time False advertising Poor scanner
February 9, 2017
Not a wireless printer, NO AIR PRINT as advertised. False advertising. Dont buy the $99 version of this printer. It belongs in a museum. The scanner is also hard to setup and does not scan efficiently. It will scan 4 pages and then pause for 5 seconds per page.. (200 dpi grayscale 8.5x11") Waste of time and money!
Not impressed
September 5, 2016
The product worked for about a week and stopped working. I spent several hours trying to trouble the problem. I was unable to get any computer to send a print job to the computer. It would not even print a test job. Biggest down side is that this is a network printer and has no wifi. So you have to make sure it is connected via Ethernet. I thought this was good for my house because I have a big house and I wanted to be able to print from the farthest point. But this just adds another layer of complexity when you are trying to troubleshoot the issue.
I've struggled with this printer for about 1 year, I'm giving up and moving on--Bye Bye Canon!
September 2, 2016
When my very old, reliable workhorse HP Laserjet 5 died, I bought this printer. I hate it! When it works, it's great, however, here are the problems I have with it:
1) The touch screen is not very responsive. When an error mode shows up, there is no option besides going through the touchscreen, no bypass the touch screen mode.
2) The toner cartridges do not last very long. I am a student and print for school, not a business. I replaced the toner about 6 months ago and it has been flashing error for the past month telling me the toner is low. I have to clear the error (touch screen) and then continue.
3) If the printer runs out of paper while printing, "Error Mode" again, even though I put more paper in it, the printing does not resume until I use the touch screen and go about 2 menus deep to tell the printer, to "resume" the print job. That is NOT intuitive. I never had to do these things or had these problems with my old HP 5.
I shopped a long time before deciding on this printer, and I need to start shopping again because this printer is not going to last.
Incredibly disappointing: malfunctioning menu screen and ADF
August 25, 2016
Incredibly disappointing for Canon, with whom I have had good success in the past. It would be MUCH improved if it was operated only with buttons; the touch screen is a nightmare. To get it to respond to our pressing to make a selection, we must keep a pen attached to the printer so we can press with the tip of it, in just the right spot, with just the right pressure . . . and perhaps holding one leg in the air and one eye closed. It is nightmarish to JUST GET "COPY" to work. Many iterations of this routine to GET A COPY. Such a waste of our time. Secondly, the ADF began creating lines on our copies within about 10 months. We have cleaned the ADF per instructions, we have called tech support, we have done everything possible, but the ADF has become INOPERABLE. We have many, many multiple page documents to copy each day, and it is not feasible to lay each. . . page. . . on . . . .the . . . glass . . . and then also COLLATE.
SUCH a disappointment. I absolutely cannot recommend this unit due to the poor quality of the menu screen and the ADF. It doesn't matter how many bells and whistles a copier/printer/scanner/fax/airprinter has if you cannot give it commands (malfunctioning screen) or feed the original through the ADF.
