Don't have to struggle with my iffy phone GPS anymore
January 18, 2016
Had a bit of the struggle to set it up the first time to work on my android phone. After I found the software on the google store it's works like a charm. It is fast to connect and has been very good battery life.
Great directed gps
September 18, 2015
Set up on my tablet using Bluetooth GPS app and rout66 mapping app (seems to work better for me than Google maps or I don't understand Google well enough)No ac charger but DC is fine since I use it in the car anyway and battery last longer than any trip I take
Good GPS for the price.

Good GPS at a great price. Use it with Jeppesen Flight Deck Pro. Easy set up. The only problem is it only comes with a car charger, no wall charger.

Perfect GPS for charting
May 24, 2017
very nicehad the discontinued version for years and worked well on Win XP- 7 however was not compatible with Win 8 and up.This unit worked perfect on my Win 10 integrated on my chart program PolarView from Polar Navy. This version comes driver to be installed in a mini CD, the older unit do not recall been included.excellent product, great price.
FANTASTIC!
July 5, 2016
Absolutely fantastic. Worked in Windows 10 Pro 64bit desktop without installing ANY drivers.Worked in Windows 7 Pro 64bit laptop without installing ANY drivers.Neither OS required a restart..I'm using it with Street Atlas USA 2015 Plus [Download] an offline gps program. Street Atlas USA recognized it immediately without my needing to select it.The settings if needed are -Device: GlobalSat BU-353Port: USBSettings: 4800,8,N,1If your computer picks anything else, set it to the above settings. The first time that Street Atlas USA locked on to the satellites it took about a minute and a half. After that, Street Atlas USA locks on to the satellites in the blink of an eye.Testing it on both computers *INSIDE* my home, it picked up 7 to 8 satellites! No question about it - this is one great GPS receiver. As to the many 1 star reviews, I didn't find any that were valid. That's not to say that some people have computer problems that they don't know how to resolve, or that someone didn't get a bad unit. But I had absolutely NO problems.
Works, but not for my purpose.
October 16, 2015
Purchased this to use with my netbook and Microsoft Streets & Trips. It connected right away and worked great. So cool that you can just put out the window on the roof of your car with the strong built-in magnet. I wanted to use it on a road trip that I had planned on the Streets & Trips software which included over 90 stops along the way. The only problem is the voice on Streets & Trips is not loud enough even with the speakers turned all the way up on the netbook. I could not hear the directions in the car at all, so I sent it back and purchased a regular GPS.
A simple, inexpensive, but accurate GPS receiver
October 7, 2015
I wanted a simple, inexpensive, but accurate GPS receiver to use with Google Earth's "real-time GPS" function. This GlobalSat BU-353-S4 USB GPS Receiver works perfectly for that use. It is small and unobtrusive and the long cord allows it to be placed on the dashboard of my car. With my laptop in my car and the GlobalSat BU-353-S4 plugged into its USB port my position is shown very accurately in Google Earth. I have taken a number of test drives and this GPS receiver updates my moving position with just a little delay (it may be Google Earth that is causing the delay). This GPS receiver is so accurate that if I drive one direction on a two-lane road and then drive back the other direction, the route lines in Google Earth can be seen to be separate and right over the corresponding lane used. Please note that for this setup to work - without any currently active internet connection - the satellite imagery must have been previously loaded into the Google Earth cache (do an internet search for "google earth offline" and follow links from there; it is possible to create multiple caches of different areas). The GlobalSat BU-353-S4 USB GPS Receiver comes with a small but handy application, GPS Utility, which can be used to check the functioning of the receiver. The app displays a sky map of all of the GPS satellites detected and the signal strength, as well as the raw data stream from all detected satellites. It also provides data for current longitude, latitude, heading, elevation, and speed. Please note that it appears that the computer port used by this GPS receiver cannot be used by two applications at the same time - only one app can access the GPS satellite data at a time - so if running Google Earth "real-time GPS" the GPS Utility app will not receive the GPS data at the same time.In summary, this GlobalSat BU-353-S4 USB GPS Receiver works perfectly and is exactly what I was looking for. It should work for any "GPS aware" application (such as Google Earth).
I'm found!
January 28, 2015
This item works as advertised. I use it to bring GPS into Nobeltec Navigation software on my new laptop running Windows 8.1. My old receiver would not work with Windows 8 so I had to purchase a new one. This item was 1/3 the cost of my old one and works just as well!Install was a breeze. I followed the instructions on the disc included in the box, which had a link to their website with the most current drivers. Once the drivers installed, I rebooted and loaded the included GPS Info program to test the receiver and see what port it was being assigned. All worked as it should. One thing to note, you must close GPS Info before bringing data into another app/program. Of course this is in the instructions as well.Nobeltec's setup wizard picked it up right away and it is working great!
Great product. Just watch the model number you order
July 14, 2014
I bought this because my existing BU-353 did not work with my new Windows 8 computer. I think you will be happy with this product but make very sure it is a BU-353-S4. The S4 has the new chipset and earlier versions do not. Take care on the model number. This antenna will work for you for real time navigation with Streets and Roads, Topo USA and other laptop navigation software, and give you a precise location. I find it helpful and more reliable than tethering a handheld GPS to my laptop. This receiver gets is power from your laptop and has no batteries to worry about

Windows Sensor API compatible with GPSComplete
March 29, 2017
Windows Sensor API compatible means that this will work with a lot of the newer software found on the Windows Store, along with older software that uses NMEA. This will work with things such as the Windows 10 Maps app (which is very nice since it lets you download maps of each state locally to your device). You must set up GPS Complete in order to do this, there is a guide on how to do this on the manufacturer's website. The physical hardware itself is great. It can easily get a fix fast indoors even on a cold boot. It consumes little more power than an average USB flash drive.
Get Your GPS Fix
March 9, 2017
I have a PC/Android tablet that does not have gps built in. I have Microsoft Streets and Trips on the Windows 10 partition and CoPilot on the Android partition. I needed gps capability to use these map programs. The Android app was a little tricky to figure out but works well once configured. Pretty much the same thing with Windows 10. The GlobalSat provides a quick dependable gps fix. I've also used this gps receiver with my Macbook Pro with Apple Maps and Google Maps.
Good GPS but needs app to make it work on Android
April 17, 2016
Nice accurate external GPS. I have been getting within 3 ft repeatability. Make sure that the butt end (non usb side) is facing skyward. Also you will need to install an app ('pl2303Info' on google play) on an android phone. On newer phones (android 5) you will need to turn on a hidden feature called 'allow mock locations' in developer options which is also hidden and requires a weird sequence of pushing buttons. Search the net for 'unlock developer options on android 5'. I'm sure this sounds complex but in reality it will take you more time to search for the app and the unlock instructions then to make it work.
Compact and Lightweight
June 26, 2015
Purchased this to use with my Raspberry Pi. Connected up, configured, and no issues acquiring satellites. Also pulls double duty as a timing source when my Pi has no internet connectivity. Comes with a dust cover, and a 6-8 inch cable which is nice for using in projects where space within an enclosure is at a premium.
Works great on my Windows 8.1 tablets
February 14, 2015
I've used this successfully on both Windows 8.1 tablets that I've tried it on. First plug the GPS unit into your tablet's micro-USB port (or its full-size USB port using the included adapter). Then the GPS unit installs some software; then under DEVICE MANAGER | Ports (COM & LPT), you'll see a new entry called "Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port (COM3)." When the little red light on the GPS unit starts blinking, you've connected to satellites and should have good GPS data coming out the simulated serial port; you'll likely have to go outside to get this connection working. If you want to use the GPS unit on a program that uses the Windows API to receive the GPS data (like most Windows store apps), you'll need to install the GPSDirect program (search the Web to find it). I've used the GPS unit successfully with MAPS PRO (a touch-friendly Windows store program that works nicely on tablets) and EXPERTGPS (a very powerful Windows desktop program less suited for tablets); both allow you to download USGS topographical maps, which are ideal for hiking. Also ideal for hiking is the weight of the USB GPS unit -- a mere 6 grams (a fifth of an ounce)! When paired with a cheap 7-inch Windows 8.1 tablet and MAPS PRO, you have a mapping GPS for hiking with great maps at a fraction of the cost of a regular hiking GPS. And you can transfer the USB GPS unit to another tablet or laptop whenever you like.
Just what I needed
October 12, 2014
Bought this to use with aviation navigation software on my Windows 8.1 tablet and has worked great so far. Acquisition time is very short, and WAAS is enabled by default on the chip. Note that this does not use the Windows 8 location API, but instead creates a COM port for an app to access location, which shouldn't be an issue for most unless your app is newer and designed to *only* use the Win 8 API. In that case, there are a couple different software options available from other vendors that I'm aware of that will send the data to location API. Also, only 1 app can access the COM port at a time (gpsGate can help here).Sensitivity seems to be excellent - I'm able to acquire a full WAAS signal in my house, and in my car as well. Haven't tried it in the plane yet, but I have a feeling it'll work equally as well.I noticed that as long as there is any power at all to the micro USB port, the GPS will continue to run, so depending on your device, it's sleep mode may or may not turn the port/GPS off to save your battery power.UPDATE:Used this in the plane and worked great - actually better than another handheld aviation GPS that I own. Accuracy was excellent, and never had any issue with satellite reception, and this was while I had the unit on my kneeboard where it was somewhat down low and not as good of a view of the sky. Nice to know I don't need to worry about having an antenna sitting on top of the panel. So far, this little GPS has been an awesome value.

Nice Bluetooth GPS with annoying status lights and antiquated charge port.
December 31, 2016
Nice design, foot print not much bigger than a match box. Quickly gets a fix on satellites even indoors as long as there is a window. Bluetooth pairing with all of my devices was no problem. The 4mm (OD) charge port is a relict from the old days that prevents the use of a standard USB cell phone charger. It only comes with a charge cable for the cigarette lighter . The 3 LED lights (2 of them flashing all the time) are absolutely essential for operation and diagnosis but also a huge annoyance in a dark room or in the car at night. The removable Li-Ion battery is 3.7v / 1100mAh.The package comes with diagnostic software on a CD which was of no use to me. I used the device to replace the not functioning onboard GPS on my Galaxy Note 4. The Android app that GlobalSat recommends as GPS mock did not work for me. I had a hard time with many Bluetooth <> GPS apps to get the Note 4 to receive GlobalSat GPS properly. Ended up with "Bluetooth GPS".
Works great with my Android tablet
March 26, 2016
Works great with my Android tablet. Bluetooth connectivity works fine. Had to install an app on the tablet (Bluetooth GPS) that understands the SPP protocol that the device uses. And had to enable "Mock Locations" in the Android settings. After doing that, can use with Google Maps etc. Only 4 stars because, as a previous reviewer noted, the device 5V charger comes with car cigar lighter adaptor only, rather than USB. I spliced it to a USB charging cable as that reviewer suggested. I could not find a compatible USB cable since the barrel adaptor that plugs into the device is not one of the standard types that I could find on a USB charging cable.
Great unit except for missing USB.
November 12, 2015
The bluetooth on my Samsung player failed to find me after an hour drive. I was delighted with the difference after purchasing this unit. It finds the receiver in about 10 seconds. It's been such a delight to have my Co-Pilot back! I also miss the USB connector, so did as Westcoaster and fixed their omission. Works great now.

Great device. So far, no issues. Quick lock on satelites. It would be preferrable if device could be charged from USB instead of dedicated 12v automotive accessory connector.
Wireless GPS for your Bluetooth equipped Windows 8.1 tablet
May 21, 2015
Battery life is good, but longer would have been better for some applications. The receiver is sensitive enough that this unit works fine while inside my sailboat, so no need to take it outside at all. It works perfectly with my Windows 8.1 tablet and (download for free) OpenCPN marine navigation software. Its Bluetooth signal strength is sufficient to allow leaving the GPS receiver down below while using the tablet as a hand-held chartplotter in the cockpit. The DC cigarette lighter adapter allows the unit to be plugged in for charging while the unit is on, so the unit can be in use for days or weeks with no concern for battery life.

March 19, 2015
I'm a 757/767 pilot for one of the US majors, using this GPS receiver with a MS Surface 2 tablet running Jeppesen Flight Deck Pro. The unit acquires a fix rapidly and displays the aircraft position on the Jepp enroute view as well as on the airport diagram. However, anytime you open another app on the Surface without keeping the Jepp FDP in view (split window) it stops 'talking' to the GPS receiver. It does not drop the bluetooth connection, but when you go back to the FDP view you will not see your position for a minute or two while the FDP initiates receiving fix info from the Global Sat unit again. Not a deal breaker, but slightly annoying.Unfortunately this unit only ships with a car charger. Since the input voltage is the same as an iphone charger (5v, 1 amp) I cut the tip off of the supplied charger and spliced it into a USB cable. That way I can plug it into my iphone charger block, works perfectly. Or you can order a USB cable with a 4.00 x 1.7mm barrel plug to do the same thing.

December 31, 2016
Bought this last year for use with the Stratux Project. (ADS-B.) It works fine, although we found that the new VK-162 works better. (Receives more satellites.) And the VK-162 is cheaper too.As a result, the Stratux Project will be moving away from supporting the BU-353.

November 27, 2016
Bought this guy to make myself a gps unit with a Raspberry Pi. It took some tweaking on the Pi's part, but I did get it to work. It picks up signals really fast and doesn't draw much power at all. Great product.
Worked with my Windows 10 laptop and Google Earth.
October 2, 2016
Bought it with one-day shipping with sunday delivery, it arrived on time, hooked up to my Asus laptop running windows 10 instantly, connected and worked perfectly with Google Earth's GPS function without even installing any drivers. Kudos for a good product. The reason it is not 5 stars is that the directions, on paper and on the included mini CD, were not all that much. Info is king, but hey, it worked without needing anything so I guess we're good to go.
Very good device.... needs micro USB end though for tablets.
April 5, 2015
Great little device!!! My one complaint, they don't offer it in a micro USB plug to use with a tablet. Had to try two different OTG cables to get it to work... Now is up and running perfectly... Small neat and very sensitive. With my BU-353-S4 , a $20 tablet, some free software and the $5 OTG device I now have perfectly working GPS in my car on a 7" screen with voice directions as well.
A quality receiver
January 15, 2015
I purchased this receiver to replace a previous generation BU-353 that wasn't compatible with current Windows USB driver software. I use the receiver in conjunction with Microsoft Streets and Trips (now discontinued) and laptop when we make our annual pilgrimage from upstate NY to Orlando FL to find hotels, Starbucks and hotels en-route. This new receiver performs admirably in being able to pick up satellites more quickly, reliably and with more satellite fixes than the older version. For example, it was able to find satellites from my den deep inside my home that the older BU-353 was not able to do. And similar to the previous version, it is thoroughly weather-proofed and has held up in rain, sleet, snow and sub-zero temperatures. (Also in my role as chief navigator, now I can continue to relinquish most of our long-distance driving to my wife!). A quality product.

The unit works as advertised. I am using it on an Android tablet in conjunction with Avare flight navigation program and it is working well.I had problems at first getting Avare to see the GPS info but I mistakingly was using the Avare External info App to see it but using that App caused the Global Sat GPS to shut off. The solution was to use Global Sat's app and NOT Avare's External App.The GPS also works with my Windows 10 tablet.

Small unit
March 27, 2016
This one of 2 GPS receivers I purchased. The other is larger and can connect by USB or Bluetooth. This one may be more sufficient if you're cramped for space. It plugs in directly to the micro USB port on your tablet or phone. The package also includes an adapter for use in a full-size USB port. The receiver updates 1 every 5 -7 seconds. Otherwise, accuracy is excellent.
Inexpensive Tablet GPS dongle alternative to the massive GPS "Puck"
September 22, 2015
It works well. Takes a little longer than I'd like to lock in but that might be software more than hardware. The Globalsat ND-105C GPS unit is very small and as stated uses a micro-USB connector. It does not use much power and was able to track well on my Dell Venue 8. I gave the tablet away when it auto upgraded to Windows 10. Life is too short to struggle with bad software. I use Android and Navagatrix now.

Problems Windows bluetooth connectivity
October 27, 2015
You would think that Bluetooth and Windows would just work by now. But I cannot get this to work reliably on either Windows 10 or Windows 8 on two different laptops. The problems are probably with Windows, but I can't figure them out.On my Lenovo ultrabook with Windows 10, whenever I turn on bluetooth I loose my wifi connection. Turn off bluetooth, and wifi works again. Anoying. But even with Wifi off, the bluetooth connection to the GPS receiver drops out sometimes and I have to turn bluetooth on and off to get it to reconnect. On my Acer Aspire with Windows 8, sometimes it will drop out and then it will just not connect. The only way I can get it to connect again is to reboot the PC.
Decent external gps unit for cars.
May 15, 2015
It only comes with a car charger. Though I am getting 2.5 meter accuracy.
Lacks basic features.
December 17, 2014
I will say it as accurate and quick as one would come to expect. However it lacks a lot of key features that have me debating a return.1. No mini usb port/charging. It uses an old round DC Jack and you have to purchase a wall charger separately. I cannot believe in this day in age they elected to limit such an important and common connection.2. Auto power off after BT disconnected. It powers off to save battery if no device is connected while it's not being charged. There is no option to change this. There are actually no options at all. It cannot be programmed via software or updated due to its lack of usb connection. You cannot change refresh rates or anything. Not what I expected from the maker of the BU353. Going to get a qstarz, that has these options.

Decent for the price, don't expect the world (or even listed features)
December 14, 2015
Works in Linux well, but there are a lot of things this "Says" it does that it doesn't.WAAS/ EGNOS Support.... Yeah, it has support but can't ever seem to get a lock.CGEE-start time of less than 15 seconds under most conditions... That condition must be planets aligning. This fluctuates from 10-20 seconds to several minutes. I have a non-current clock (using this as a time source) so if it is back-feeding time data, it may be messing it up.Magnetic... If it is, I wouldn't leave it on my roof if the wind was blowing 3 kts. I couldn't get any decent stick on my car, but take that with a grain of salt as I didn't really try hard.Having said all of that, I didn't /need/ WAAS, and startup time only happens once, and I planned on leaving this in my car, so frankly this product is okay, and pretty good for the price, but if you need higher quality you may want to look elsewhere. If you need PPS, this doesn't support it either. Google "gpsd hardware catb" for a list of and ranking of GPS hardware. Here is what the site has to say about this model:"This receiver does not support PPS timing output. Much like the BU-353 except for using a SiRFStar IV chip. Has poor sensitivity and takes a lot longer to cold-start than the vendor claim 45 of 45 seconds. Gary Miller rates this device "DO NOT EVER BUY ONE!", observing "The big selling point of the SiRF IV is the lower power needs. Looks like they made that happen at the expense of sensitivity and timeliness of fixes." Also, has the SiRF-IV tendency to freeze when switched from binary to NMEA mode (power-cycling it unjams it)."

November 15, 2016
It works when the phone is removed from the case. With a case the USB connection is too short. I was aware of that before purchasing this so I also purchased an extension cable. The extension cable works for every other device but this one. It is a full pin cable not just a power cable.
Dongle vs. integrated GPS chip
November 14, 2015
The product arrived on time, and it was packed very nicely. It contained the USB dongle and a cable USB - micro USB, which was a nice addition. Unfortunately the disk with the drivers and the software was a mini disk, so not much of use on my particular laptop. Since there was no way to install the software from the CD-ROM, I went to the company / product page in order to download the necessary drivers, but unfortunately the download link says "Not available". Luckily the Windows 7 Pro managed to install correctly the driver and recognized correctly the dongle. Next, I needed the software in order to actually test the GPS data, but again no luck. It took me a good half an hour of searching the Internet for a link to the correct software and eventually I was able to have the GPS data flowing to my laptop.Next, I went on to test the dongle on my Samsung Galaxy Tab 3, since the main purpose of the device was to be used on mobile devices. The software part was a bit more straight forward, since Google Play Store has the utility needed for the dongle to work right away (at least on my Android 4.2.2 version). Unfortunately the accuracy of the GPS dongle is lower than the accuracy of the integrated GPS chip on my tablet. For example, in Google Maps as well as in another 3rd party GPS app, the accuracy of the dongle was reported as 10 meters, while the integrated chip of the tablet had an accuracy of 4 meters. Also, the fix on the satellites appears to be weaker on the dongle (inside the cabin for example it lost the fix on the signal while the native chip of the tablet did not). The reported speed and the altitude were the same though. This test was done while sailing a few miles off the coast of Florida, Miami.Overall, the device works and it does serve it`s purpose if it is used on devices without native GPS chips (like a laptop for example) but it is less accurate than some of the integrated GPS chips on the modern mobile devices.
Its ok...
March 9, 2015
I guess it works OK, but most of the time it is significantly slower to find a signal and less reliable than my hand held Garmin. Oddly, it seems to find a location much faster plugged up to a standard laptop through the USB adapter cable than it does into my windows tablet direct plug in.It is OK for the price and considering the size, but just doesn't perform well enough to suit what I was hoping to do with it.

Great Concept with a Fatal Flaw
December 12, 2015
I purchased this Bluetooth GPS for use aboard my motor yacht. I am traveling hundreds of miles South this autumn to find the Sun. In terms of concept, I love the unit. I plug it into the cigar lighter on the flying bridge, and it aquires a signal quickly. The GPS pairs with my HP Pavilion dv5 quickly as well. I interface the GPS to the OPEN CPN program (which provides a template that will allow the user to download and overlay NOAA Raster Nautical Charts onto the computer display.I have two helm stations. With a wireless GPS, I can simply close the laptop, grab the laptop and its power supply, and move from one helm location to the next with no trouble at all. It is nice to not have to drag a GPS down to a lower helm station (where signal may be compromised). When the boat is at dock, and the GPS is plugged in, and my OPEN CPN chart program is activated, the GPS keeps ticking away the position on the screen. Here's the rub: When I start to cruise, and after a short while, the GPS consistently stops talking to the laptop, and the boat's position remains frozen on the last acquired location. Obviously, that is NO GOOD.I suspect that some type of interference from the operating engines is shutting down the Bluetooth connection. To reacquire the position, I am forced to reboot and restart the program. When navigating a vessel on open waters, this is time consuming and distracting . I wish I could fix this fatal flaw, but I don't know what to do.As a result of this flaw, the GPS is basically useless for my intended use.
Not for IOS.

Apparently not compatible with IOS devices. It would have been nice to know this before ordering it and sending it back.

Incomplete software
November 16, 2015
Incomplete software does not permit GPS info transfer to navigation or maps appsReceiver works with good satellite sensitivity
What is the point of this
August 13, 2015
What good is this? It doesn't work with any map programs like Google or bing. The only thing I have found that it might work with is Microsoft streets and maps which they quit making several years ago. Yeah I works with Windows 8.1 and with windows 10 all right, but it does nothing and it ended up in my glove box
Does Not Work with Windows RT!
January 22, 2015
Does not work with Window RT ... would have been nice to know. I called tech support and was advised that Windows RT support and drivers are not available. There are no plans to create drivers for RT. The product seems very well made however and if you're using a compatible device I expect performance will be satisfactory.
Does not work with Windows 8 Metro/Store Apps
February 28, 2013
Out of the box experience is poor. No manual. Online documentation is scattered and poorly organized. I did have to find and install a driver from the web; then, the GSP would work with old-style desktop apps. Never could get it to work with modern Windows 8 Metro/Store Apps. Sending it back for a refund.

poor accuracy 50-200 feet
August 12, 2017
Slow to pick up satellite signals, taking at least 5 to 20 minutes even longer to lock-in and forget about it if you were inside your home (I live right on the river bank with no obstacles), poor accuracy 50-200 feet ... anyway that is what you get for the price you paid, 4800 baud rate, not 9600, not as good as praised by many, I am looking for a better device, any advice will be appreciated

November 14, 2015
A plus is it is small. However, it is physically very weakly designed. I was unable to test it's functionality due to the excessive force required by the purchased adapter (I was unaware this product included the adapter) the male micro usb broke connection with the circuit board inside.

February 14, 2015
According to the manual for this device, the drivers should come pre-installed with linux and android. That does not appear to be the case. No linux running computer or any of the 3 android devices I plugged it into would recognize it. I went all over the internet trying to find a solution and installed every app, program, and driver that was recommended and still nothing.

The ad says this device works with 'Bluetooth enabled smart phones'. That's flat out wrong because it doesn't work with Apple devices. Also, the device only comes with a car charger. Since the device requires a special connector instead of the more universal Micro-USB cable, there is literally nowhere else it can be charged. This makes the BT-821 highly unusable compared to other devices.
Bluetooth- no pairing
November 9, 2015
I don't know how effective the GPS functions are because the Bluetooth function does not work at all. I tried multiple devices with no luck in pairing. I turned on a wireless keyboard and my iPad found it immediately. I was also disappointed that the only option for charging is an older style 12v plug-in. The instruction CD had minimal instructions and no trouble shooting help. I will be returning the unit.

October 9, 2014
Maybe it is just may particular device/software I pair this guy with, but it has a fatal flaw. It will often give me a postion that is about 200 feet off. When I notice that and disconnect/reconnect I get the proper position, but it is not always possible to know when it is off. I will be returning it if I can and replacing it.

Used it twice with my marine charting system. On the third time it failed to work. No amount of resetting would make it work. Too late to return it so it is destined for the trash bin.
Fail for Nav apps
October 22, 2015
Bought to use on a IBM Thinkpad, win 7 pro 64 bit laptop, with nautical navigation programs. The same apps work perfectly with internal GPS on my tablet, but either give wrong location or PORT errors when using this model. Even if it did work, I am not happy about other features. My simple Samsung tablet's gps works inside my house, this has to be taken outside to see the sats, a PITA when doing settings.. Not having a reduce button so that it is not always on the desktop, is very annoying as well. I have never seen an app or device that does not tell what it is compatible with until this one. So please save your replies of "well it works fine with mine" That's how it is, not every device or app works on every system. If you are needing gps for waterways, do some homework before wasting $$ on this.

Anyone know what kind of driving or map freeware I can use for this? For offline use? Downloaded Google Earth but cant tell if it's reading the device. Looks complicated too. I want to use a laptop for a large display when driving.

Worked for two months then died
May 16, 2017
Worked fine for two months, until it didn't. Started with "device descriptor failed" message in device manager to not being recognized at all when plugged into any computer. Thinking that perhaps it was the USB pigtail that comes with it, tried plugging directly into and Android device too with no success. It's dead and I'm out 28 bucks.
plugged it into the micro usb cable provided. Then tried to disconnect it and the whole thing fell apart.
May 6, 2017
Terrible build quality fell apart on first use. Housing fell apart plastic surrounding the electronics and the micro usb part snapped. It was very very snug when i plugged it in to the provided cable. Never worked.
Does not work.
May 2, 2017
It does not work as delivered. It does not fit into the included USB cable so that my computer does not see it. I have ordered an adapter that should solve the problem. I'll try to rereview it then.Update, May 9: it still does not work. When plugged in to my Windows 10 machine it sometimes gives the message USB device not recognized. The last USB device you connected to this computer malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it.Most of the time, though, the system does not see it at all.An additional remark: the build quality appears to be very poor, i.e., it's shoddy.
Broke on first use

The GPS receiver worked on my Kindle Fire as designed. The problem is that the receiver stopped working a couple of hours into its use and has not worked since.
If you are planning on using this I strongly recommend using the app "You Are Here" instead
August 28, 2016
I had high hopes for this device since my GPS stopped working on my phone.First off the app that is designed to work with this device rarely worked for me. I was using a galaxy note 3 on kitkat. If you are planning on using this I strongly recommend using the app "You Are Here" instead. I spent several hours troubleshooting before I realized that the app that they recommend in the instructions was just extremely buggy. After I finally got it working I was very happy with the functionality of the device. It wasn't as accurate as the phone's built in GPS but it was great for the price. After a few weeks of use the dongle completely fell apart. I reached for my phone and realized that the only thing left in my phone was the usb connector. I would have given it 4 stars if it hadn't been for the poor build quality.I was really wanted to like it but unfortunately it turned out to be a waste of $35.
