Five Star Reviews: | 65% Inexpensive and Easy Fix July 10, 2017 Used this years ago around leaky windows, and recently remembered it again when I needed something to seal around an air conditioning unit. It's great for sealing out air as well as bugs, and is rolled so that you can tear off a single, double, or larger thickness. It's easy to remove (and reuse, if you're careful). I haven't ever noticed staining on the surfaces I used it on. It's an inexpensive and easy fix, and I'm sure there are a hundred more applications I haven't even thought of yet - but I bought a spare roll just in case. Unconventional Use October 3, 2016 I love this stuff. I have an old Breakfront which has open woven metal in the cabinet doors. That of course, allowed dust to accumulate on all the dishes and crystal so I had glass cut to fit the openings; of course, being so old, the glass didn't fit exactly so I used this Caulk to fill in the edges and it worked very well! So far after more than a month in my desert home, my dishes are dust free and I don't have to wash them before each use. I'm quite sure the ease of use would make this product perfect for that which it is actually intended as well! Love this stuff August 24, 2016 I love this stuff! It seals cracks, is flexible and lasts forever. I had little tiny ants getting in my kitchen window around the sink. They were driving me nuts. I tried clear silicone caulk and it kept shrinking over time and leaving little spaces for the ants to get in. Mortite to the rescue. I just unrolled what I needed and pressed it into the cracks. No more pesky ants on my counter top.No clean up.. no chemicals.Perfect! It works! January 2, 2016 I *love* this stuff. I live in a 1960's vintage apartment complex where the owner doesn't do diddly about weatherproofing. The extent of 'help' offered this year was a referral to local hardware stores for weatherproofing supplies. Well, I came here. My unit is on the second floor, has a loose-fitting glass balcony door, and equally loose-fitting windows in the bedroom. The heating is inadequate, even for western Oregon. And my apt. faces East, directly into the winds we get coming through the Columbia Gorge on the East side of Portland. 20-30 mph winds, with gusts to 40-45, means it gets cold! Doesn't help that the bedroom baseboard heater is, of course, located on the outside wall. Right where the heat can get sucked mostly towards the icy window glass. o_0The 90-feet refers to when the 8 cords are split apart, but it didn't matter that I was using 4 at a time. (*Wide* gaps. I needed the width.) I can't reach the tops of the windows or balcony door, but there was just enough to calk the bottom and both sides of my bedroom window and the balcony door. No more drafts! (Ok, mostly no more drafts. Tops are still leaking air a bit.) Hallelujah, the heaters finally have a chance against the cold. It's cheap, it works, there was enough for my needs, I can take it down easily and re-use it. Sold. Works in a Jam December 4, 2012 Mortite works fantastic whenever you need to weatherproof or seal a small gap, without making a huge fuss over it. I've used it in my apartment wherever there's a small leak in the windows (e.g., in between the air conditioning unit and the window). It sticks quite easily without being difficult to remove, even when the surface has not been fully cleaned. Once applied, it stays in place and after a year, I've never had to reapply it. 19-ounces was definitely enough for me to seal four large windows and I still had quite a bit leftover for other uses. The only caveat I would note is that it's not so easy to apply neatly after you press it into place. The line will be slightly lumpy and uneven - it's not going to be the prettiest thing, but I can't knock it for appearances when it works so well. Amazing, life-changing product November 23, 2011 I live in an old apartment (built in the 1890s) with plenty of old windows. Almost every window had a bad draft, including one really egregious case in which a large window literally had gaps in its frame.Leading up to winter, I researched a few possible products, and finally settled on this one as my primary vector of attack. It's dead-simple to use; I just roll a bit in my hands like play-doh, then press it into the cracks and gaps where drafts were coming in. It makes a tight seal, sticks well, and yet can be peeled off later with minimal effort. Magic stuff. | 0% There are no reviews yet |
Four Star Reviews: | 15% Great for refreshing and revitalizing old windows June 22, 2017 I always start a thread with a razor cut on the side that most easily rolls out, so managed to get most windows sealed with a continuous string, but even piecing together multiple pieces still looks and works fine; we put solar film on 70 year old windows, and then re-sealed with this - huge improvement to performance and looks. The product itself is easy to work with October 15, 2016 I deducted one star for the nearly impossible attempts to simply peel off a single strand when needed in any length. I solved that by peeling larger amount, laying flat on wax paper and using a pizza cutter to simply roll down the and making individual strings. The product itself is easy to work with, and after a couple months, still secure and sealing as advertised. I was nervous to apply it, but it helped! March 8, 2016 This stuff doesn't look attractive at all and is slightly fragile or crumbly to handle. However, it definitely has insulated the window in my bedroom that was always freezing and made the room feel like an icebox. When applying, i felt for where the draft was coming in and pressed it well into the cracks. The cold draft doesn't get in anywhere near as much as it used to. Also less noise gets in, and we live by a very noisy main street in Los Angeles.Glad I bought this, it's a good value and saves on heating. Use this in conjuction with a good space heater for best results in winter. I can also easily remove this whenever we move out, so it's great for apartments . 4 stars because it looks so ugly and is a little crumbly. Easy to stuff into any size crack March 2, 2014 I use both this caulking cord and the other, more waxy brand. Mortite is softer, which has both advantages and disadvantages. The stiffer cord is easier to peel off the roll (Mortite tends to break off) and save for reuse, but the Mortite is much easier to manipulate. You can stuff it more deeply into crevices, double it up or re-form it like silly putty to fill in large gaps, and install it more easily when the weather is cold. It also doesn't fall out of the cracks as easily when the weather really turns cold. All in all, it's my preferred caulk. Keeps out draft. January 7, 2013 I purchased this product to seal windows in my sunroom for the winter, where a draft could be felt on windy days. The product is about the size of a roll of duct tape, and is a pliable material, almost like silly putty. It has worked well on keeping a draft out of the sunroom, and I plan on using it every year until new windows are purchased. The 4 rather than 5 start rating is because, at times, it was hard to install because it was more inclined to stick to my fingers than the window. Pealing the cord along the lines can also be difficult at times. One roll was enough to cover 8 windows (3 ft wide each) with a good amount of caulking cord left over. Great Temporary Solution October 6, 2010 Our windows are very old and drafty and they need to be replaced soon. This is a great temporary solution to fill in all the cracks around the window frame until next spring when we replace all of our windows. We've had near freezing temperatures in the evenings already, and it does a great job eliminating the draft. This stuff is kind of like of "Play-Dough". The only complaint I have is the when I try to unroll one cord at a time, it breaks off. I was trying to keep the installation as "clean" looking as possible, but that's difficult to do when you are using a "band-aid" solution like this.UPDATE 12/22/12I forgot I used this to seal one of the windows in our garage but today I went to remove it and it's still as pliable as the day I opened the package (two years ago). Pretty impressive if you ask me! | 0% There are no reviews yet |
Three Star Reviews: | 9% Three Stars August 2, 2017 Melts and leaves a brown stain that is very difficult to eliminate the sight of. It was supposed to dry to be hard and stick on good as it cured October 23, 2016 I got this for my windows for air coming in. It was supposed to dry to be hard and stick on good as it cured. But my cats managed to pull pieces off and I found the pieces all over the house. I am sure it would have stayed in place if I did not have curious cats. Ok if you a lot of time November 21, 2014 Pain in the rear to use this. If you're retired and have all the time the world, it's a great product but if you're like me and have million other things on your to-do list, skip this and use the weather strip tape. Much faster and cleaner looking. I think the product is OK but just takes a while to use it. You need to strip it off the roll, mold it in shape, and place in the 'crack'. A bit too time consuming for me. Not the Mortite of old December 17, 2013 When I was a kid living in New England we put Mortite Caulking around all of our windows each year in preparation for the winter months. The caulk was a pretty thick diameter and pretty sturdy. The 19-oz Mortite is about 1/3 the diameter if not 1/4 and pulls apart every few inches. I found the I could get about a foot long length of the caulk by unrolling the whole roll and pulling off 2 strands at a time. It works but they've definitely made "cost reduction" adjustments to the product. I'm surprised they aren't marketing it as "New and Improved!" (sarcasm). Gets goopy at room temp August 11, 2013 Hard to separate at room temperature as it stick together in a mass. But I am in Texas so what is room temperature? Could be 80 or higher. If you take it outside before you use it you will have trouble with it sticking together and breaking up the continuity of the strands. I guess it could be put in the refrigerator for a very litle bit before use. | 0% There are no reviews yet |
Two Star Reviews: | 4% Would not adhere in an overhead gap. March 15, 2017 I bought this to seal the dampers in three fire places. I had high hopes. It was the perfect size but it would not stick to the surfaces. I am sure it would work for more traditional applications, but in my case, not for sealing the dampers on three unused fireplaces I ended up using traditional caulk. Very thin January 23, 2017 Much thinner than the Mortite I used 15 yrs ago. Need to purchase more than you expect to use. Two Stars July 26, 2016 Didn't like this product at all. It didn't work for me, ended up throwing it away. Not my favorite product December 11, 2015 Didn't stick to raw wood. Useless for my project. Regular tinted caulk worked much better. Mostly junk May 19, 2015 This stuff is basically garbage and does not work, AT ALL, like it's advertised. It does not adhere to many things all that well and tends to droop and fall out. It's basically a semi-sticky and grainy putty.Whatever surface you do successfully manage to get it to stick to, it will tend to stick to and not come off cleanly (if you want it to).It tends to dry and crack, reducing its ability to seal anything. It is very difficult to split it into individual strands(for really small spaces), and tends to break into thirds at the smallest. While it is possible to break off individual strands, it requires way more patience than I'm willing to commit to this, and will likely produce a bunch of one foot long pieces before breaking off.I'm sure it probably has its uses, but as a caulking solution/substitute, it's pretty poor. It's better, cleaner, and faster to just get a caulk gun and cut the tip to the size you need. | 0% There are no reviews yet |
One Star Reviews: | 7% Doesn't stay stuck, worthless March 14, 2017 This doesn't stay stuck. I used it to seal off a hallway door in the condo I live in, and it has all fallen off, no matter how many times I keep pressing it up. I ended up just throwing it all out. Save your money... January 21, 2016 This product was abused before it was sent. The item was not pliable and had many dents in the cord. I was unable to peel the strings from the roll and just gave up. One Star January 4, 2016 This crap was completely ruined when we received it. Ripped apart and totally unusable. Like old bubble gum. I wouldn't waste your time with this April 30, 2015 I wouldn't waste your time with this. You have to peel apart the cords and they usually break off at 12" or so. I put this in the door jam of my door leading outside. I used this product on the inside, but within a week all of it had fallen out. It also stuck more to my fingers than anything else and was SUPER frustrating for me to use. Waste of time and money March 30, 2015 Total crap. My windows are 40+ years old, single pane and in desperate need of replacing. The moment it got cold and my windows condensed, all of these strips peeled off of my windows and ended up all over the house as the cats would play with the fallen strips. I followed the instructions to the letter and was very disappointed with the results. Terrible product November 13, 2014 Totally disappointed. I have used this type of product for years to seal the insides of my windows in winter, always been easy to use. This product is horrible. The little rope strips won't peel, they break and you end up with a big mess that you have to piece together. I would never use this brand again. Don't waste your money, you will be as frustrated as I am. | 100% ... yrs to do and problem for my daughter also hate the November 16, 2015 Ive gotten these kits for a few yrs never had any problems till this yr the tape is worthless had to go buy tape the would stick way harder this yrs to do and problem for my daughter also hate the tape This is awful. A friend put them up for ... November 5, 2015 This is awful. A friend put them up for me a couple hrs ago and has already started to come off. The film not the tape. He fixed it and it's coming off again. I decided to start over. The tape peals off a little at a time. If at all. I hope a hair dryer will help me get it off. I've done a lot of windows and never had this problem other brands. I think the plastic would be ok but I wouldn't use the tape. |
