I was disappointed that it was just screen and couldn't stop drafts up the chimney when not in use (our floo alone is insufficient), but our son bought and had cut a piece of plexiglass which fits invisibly behind it. It is NOT pewter nor even pewter colored. It's black with some scuff to expose silver colored metal. To me, that part is unimportant as it works beautifully in the room. I'm very pleased. Perfect! Wish I had known there was a matching fireplace tool set before I bought a different random one. December 11, 2015 The advertisement doesn't do this product any justice. It is gorgeous. In the ad image, the grate metal in the back of the larger diamonds are hard to see. In hopes there would be more than just some large diamond holes to keep the embers from flinging out unto the hardwood floors, we ordered it. Not a mistake. The metal is more sturdy than one could imagine from the ad image. This Plow & Hearth Celtic Knot Two-Door Fireplace Hearth Screen fits perfectly up against the opening. I wish there were other sizes available so we could order matching Fireplace Hearth Screens for our other fireplaces. January 29, 2017 I use my fireplace a lot, and my previous grate had to suffer through a lot. The poor thing eventually melted, and I had to throw it out once it fell apart. The Panacea Cast Iron Fire Grate was my replacement, and my research payed off. I heat my home with the fireplace I have in my apartment, and because of this I burn black locust most of the time. Black locust burns long and hot, and so I needed a thick and durable grate that would be able to withstand high heat from heavier wood than something like pine. This grate has held up beautifully so far, in spite of the long, hot fires it's been enduring. It hasn't warped like my old grate, and when I toss another log onto the fire it endures the impact like a champ. If you need a durable grate that's going to last years you should consider this one, you won't be disappointed. good value August 15, 2016 I just got mine and I have not had any crack or warp issues like some of the reviews have stated. For all the cheap Chinese junk out there nowadays its tough to find anything of quality that will last. This tool set has proven to be strong and reliable. I heat with wood, so my fireplace toolset gets used every day. It has held up incredibly well, due to the fact that they are a one piece design and made of steel. The one piece tool design also means that when you're trying to twist the poker to turn a log it won't come loose like tools with a two piece, thread on handle. The stand is also a one piece, sturdy as heII design. And, unlike most crap nowadays that requires assembly, this set you literally pull the stand out of the box, unwrap the bubble wrap from the tools and hang the tools on the stand. For the money you can't go wrong with this set. A+ all the way. Nicely Made. January 16, 2015 Very nicely constructed. Not cheaply done. No screws holding it together. Good finish that seems like powder coating. Well sized. I really like the pick up tong. It makes it easy to grab a log and place it where I want. The only issue is that the poker hook is longer than I'd like. You get used to it by angling the the poker, but at times it does make it awkward. I'll take a hacksaw to it to shorten it. Looks great next to our wood burning stove Good Product for a Good Price January 3, 2013 I originally bought this set for my son as a gift. My husband and I were so impressed with it, that we turned around and purchased one for ourselves. The set is very sturdy. It sits nicely on our hearth and does not "wobble" around. Our old set, which was a brass one with oak handles, was not nearly as sturdy as this set. (Our old set also cost significantly more than this set!) The wrought iron has a smooth finish to it; the center weave gives the set a nice look; and, the tools all look well made. So far, they have worked out great. (As a side note, for those buyers also interested in a log holder, we also bought the "Uniflame Black Wrought Iron Log Rack with Scrolls." It matches this tool set perfectly!) Nice heavy screen December 26, 2015 I really like the look and fit of this screen. My husband was somewhat apprehensive about the color. The screen is mostly black with silver streaks...somewhat similar to a distressed look. Basically appears to be a black paint job with certain areas where the paint has been scraped off to reveal the silver metal underneath. There aren't many of these areas, mostly at the edges.I like the screen and it compliments the grey tones in our den. No fire yet as it's been much too warm in Savannah, GA, to have need a fire. Looks great, one stripped bolt hole November 5, 2015 Looks very good and functions well. Doors stay closed. Only problem was one of the threaded bolt holes was stripped. It's for attaching one of the L-shaped brackets on the inside or back side. As a result, the bracket is loose and provides no support. It doesn't seem to affect the way it works but it's annoying to have a defective product. This defect should have been detected because the bolt was installed in the stripped out hole prior to shipping. Was received with a 1" hole in the top of ... Cracked, but works! November 9, 2013 Just like many other reviewers, the grate snapped with the first hot fire. But it really only snapped in one place so the grate is still fully functional and has worked like a charm ever since. We've used this one full summer season in our outdoor fireplace, and I expect it will last many more - seems like a silly design flaw, but in our case not a deal-breaker since no one can tell it's got a crack and it still functions fine. We've had no problems since the first use, and don't expect any more cracks to occur. Will update if it does. Decent product January 28, 2013 The Panacea 15424 grate appears to be as expected: a lighter-grade cast iron import that is reasonably priced. In the three weeks that we have used it, it has fared well, and is a good fit for our hearth. The front of the grate is cantilevered well ahead of the front legs which means that care should be exercised in loading it so as to avoid the potential for tipping forward. There is ample air space under the unit which can be an advantage or demerit depending on the design of a fireplace and the intended use (heat-generating or ornamental fire). My experience has shown that grates with a rear-sloping design and lower clearance produce a hotter, longer-lasting burn whereas grates like this one fire up well but require more firewood to maintain a consistent hot burn. For the money, this is a good grate for our needs. I have limited the rating to 4 stars because its longevity has not been determined yet. | 11% Very Good December 9, 2016 This is my first set set of fireplace tools so I don't have any previous tools to compare. But these seem to be well made, solid construction. The shovel is just the right size for cleaning my fireplace. The brush is not spectacular but certainly does the job. Does the job December 16, 2015 These are made in China, there was a sticker on it that said made in China.The coating isn't the best, there were lots of spots right out of the box where you could see the finish wasn't completely coated on there.It is decently heavy so they don't seem they're gonna break from use. The dust pan and broom work surprisingly well. The stand works just like it should and is convenient.I don't really use the log grabber all that much as its kind of awkward and difficult but useful sometimes but most times I just use the poker. My only suggestion would be to make them maybe a little bit longer as when I'm using the poker I start getting burned really quickly by the heat coming from the fireplace and feel like I should be wearing gloves and feel like if the tool was longer I wouldn't have to be as close to the fire.All in all a functional useful toolset if you aren't expecting perfection or that it's made in China. Great strong set for reasonable price! April 10, 2014 Excellent strength of construction. The stand is very sturdy and will not come apart. In fact there are no bolts in the apparatus. It is not wrought iron, but definitely a thick steel. The only complaint I have, is a wish the tools were about 3-4 inches longer. Three Star Reviews: | 7% Nice even with a hole through it - but Amazon doesn't make it easy to barter an in-between resolution October 9, 2015 Overall this is nice, but also overall is definitely not worth the $200+ price tag. In addition, mine came with a drill hole completely through the front of the unit by accident - on the bottom right hand side....in a random spot. I would up screwing a black head screw from the front into the hole and luckily as it'son the bottom and close to the edge it "sort of" disappears. The only problem I have in situations like this with Amazon and associated sellers is that I wish there were an option to contact the Seller directly to discuss. The only option is 100% return. I would have liked to ask the seller to consider my keeping the unit but crediting back $xx onto my card for the mishap and return shipping avoidance charges. Both of us would have been happy. Amazon doesn't have this contact and/or option. The all-or-nothing approach on many returns makes it sometimes a disadvantage to buy via Amazon. Lesson: on big(ger) items like this, I'll buy in-person for just these reasons. I was more fortunate than some purchasers January 14, 2015 I was more fortunate than some purchasers, the screen I got had all of the hardware needed and the wrenches fit. But, the Chinese version of Pewter was actually black with small brush strokes of silver added in some places. Also, the welds that hold the hinges to the doors are very tiny, suprised that none of them broke on the boat ride to the U.S. We do like the looks of the screen, although we really did want the pewter color and may repaint it before installation. Great looks, huge upgrade over stock screens, so.so build quality December 5, 2014 Love the look. Fit our fireplace very well. However, it came to us with a broken weld on one of the supporting legs. not a big deal breaker for me because I have access to a mig welder and had it fixed in 30 seconds. This isn't wrought iron or anything claimed to be so..it's mild steel tubing with a very nice look to it. But here is the good part. When people come over to your home, they will think it is a very expensive wrought iron piece, and it does function very well to keep things inside the fireplace!Pros: Very nice look, reasonable price, simple to setup, functions very well.Cons: not the best build quality, will get very very hot to touch when operating the fireplace.One has to consider the price. at this level you must expect a bit of compromise. If you need perfection look elsewhere. Beautiful screen, poor quality control November 26, 2014 Got in a week, which was great. I set about putting it together, then discovered a big problem. I had a lot of hardware, too much actually and most of which did not belong to the screen. Only two nuts and bolts actually went to the screen. He instructions requires four nuts and bolts and two smaller bolts. It also included two allen wrenches neither of which actually fit the bolts that went to the screen, they were too small. I ended up having to drive to the hardware store to get what was missing.I have to say that I am very disappointed. When you pay this much for something everything should be included! Yes I could have contacted the company and had hardware sent but I would've had to wait even longer to use it. The screen is beautiful and seems very sturdy and well made. Could be a little heavier, but it is solid iron. I'm keeping mine. GRATE JUST SO-SO February 17, 2014 This grate looks good and works well but doesn't last. We use our fireplace mainly for atmosphere just on weekends during the 3-month winter season here in PA. We have used our grate about 75 times since purchasing it in October 2012. The middle bottom of the grate is now sagging and two of the short cross pieces are broken completely. I'm no authority on fireplace equipment, but it seems to me that a fireplace grate should last more than two seasons with such limited use. I would look at other options. Bottom warped downward February 20, 2016 Within two fires the bottom of the grate had bent downward. Yes, I had a bed of red-hot coals. Grate downfall January 21, 2014 The packaging was not the greatest. The grate came in a box a lot larger than it needed to. Nothing to secure it inside the box. And the box was damaged I'm sure from the grate being thrown around during delivery. The grate itself was smaller than expected. We have a fire almost every night and the grate already has weakened. One wouldn't expect that in the first month of its use. Overall. The complete absence of a quality control program at the production site really makes one wonder about P&H's commitment to customer satisfaction. EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED! | 13% Just disappointed January 24, 2017 I thought that I would try and replace my eight year old plus fireplace grate. That was just a month ago. I was thrilled with the quick shipping and primes good price. Sadly I have to say that I am quite disappointed. I don't typically write reviews either way, however I was surprised at the bowing of the metal so quickly. I can only imagine that it will not be long before wood will be falling through rather than resting on top. I was excited because it seemed to be quite sturdy and is cast-iron. I will not order one again, that's for sure. Junk January 13, 2015 I bought this grate to replace the one I had only because of the size. This one fit my fire place much better. When I received it I noticed immediately that the quality of this one did not come close to the other one. The grates were much thinner. After approximately three days of burning, when I was cleaning the ashes, I noticed two of the grates had broken off. The next couple of days with a fire the entire grate collapsed. I threw it away and went back with my old smaller one. Couldn't Take the Heat December 16, 2013 This grate ended as a disappointment for us. I'll preface the remarks by stating that we have a larger hearth than most and keep a hot fire approximately 4 to 5 hrs. a winter's night. That said, we began keeping a fire towards the end of October and have been burning the majority of nights for the past month and a half. During that time, we've noticed that a couple of the perpendicular bars have dropped off and that the center of the grate has "fatigued" down to about 1/4 inch off the ground. We usually get a full season out of our grates and that was our expectation with this one.
